It was recorded about 263km distant in Kapiti, New Zealand.
The S wave arrives about 22.6 seconds after the P wave.
263km / 22.6 seconds = 11.6km per second of PS difference.
This was the third largest earthquake recorded in New Zealand.
It was very complex with ruptures observed on three faults over around 150km.
This record which covers only two and a half minutes shows three main S wave arrivals and several later and smaller shocks. Almost constant shaking was observed in Wellington over two and a half hours.
Three people appear to have died in consequence. A woman when the historic Elms homestead collapsed near Kaikoura; a man who suffered a heart attack at the time; and a man who was found dead under a bookcase in Lower Hutt near Wellington nearly two weeks after the event.
There was significant uplift and land movement mainly in coastal areas and with many landslides over a wide area. The event also pressaged slow slip activity under the lower North island.
A tsunami was generated which damaged at least one house.
State Highway One and the Main Truck Railway Line were damaged and blocked in many places and are expected to take many months to reopen. These are the main routes between most of the South Island and the North.
Kaikoura was completely cut off by land and remains very isolated two weeks after the event with only very limited access via an inland route which also sustained extensive damage.
